One day I was talking with you, and the next day you were gone
Now a part of me is lost, but it won’t last for long
‘Cause Heaven’s a little brighter, Your smile’s everywhere, dancin’
In sunflower fields, without a single care

Sunflower child, with rainbow eyes
Every time I see your face, every time I see you smile
A kaleidoscope of feeling, washes over me
I just can’t erase your memory, ‘cause I know you are free
Sunflower Child

I can picture you now, running so free
Sowing the seeds of love, beneath your shoeless feet
And as the sprouts begin to grow, a little life breaks through the soil
That plant grows big and strong, nurtured by a young boy

Sunflower child, with rainbow eyes
Every time I see your face, every time I see you smile
A kaleidoscope of feeling, washes over me
I just can’t erase your memory, ‘cause I know you are free
Sunflower Child

It’s okay to be sad,  it’s okay to cry
And it’s okay to laugh out loud, and sing for a while
When the tears start to fall, I’ll look  for your smile
I won’t soon forget what you left for me
My sunflower child

Sunflower child, with rainbow eyes
Every time I see your face, every time I see you smile
A kaleidoscope of feeling, washes over me
I just can’t erase your memory, ‘cause I know you are free
Sunflower Child

Every time I see your face, I’ll remember your smile

John Ploof tragically lost his life on May 4, 2007 at the young age of 9. In his short lifetime, he impacted the lives of many people. Shortly after his death, John’s parents, Elmer and Pat Tinklenberg, set up a scholarship savings account. Each year, Pat contributed some money to the account on John’s birthday. Additionally, $2.00 from the sale of each original CD recording of Sunflower Child was donated to the fund by Paul Nye. The scholarship fund rose to $4,000 by the time John’s classmates graduated from Walker-Hackensack-Akeley School in Walker, MN in 2016. Eight students were awarded $500 each for essays they wrote on their memories of John.

From the time John was a young child, he loved and was fascinated with sunflowers. He eagerly looked forward to each “sunflower season” to plant his giant sunflowers. This song is dedicated to Elmer and Pat Tinklenberg, and to John’s family and friends.

The original recording released in 2007 as a single was printed in CD form. Paul invited several of John’s classmates to his home studio in May 2016 to re-record the song, complete with new vocals. Featured on this recording are: Jacob Mahon (lead vocals), Emily Widman and Lexi Holt (background vocals). Paul arranged the music and played all instruments heard on the recording.
